Description
An overview of the epidemiological and biological evidence that cannabis use increases the risk of psychosis, and who might be those most vulnerable. Last but not least, can we effectively support those who have develop psychosis and are cannabis dependent to stop their use? If so, what happens when they do?
Learning Objectives
- Learn about the epidemiological impact of high potency cannabis use at individual and population level
- The interplay between high potency cannabis use and DNA in shaping risk for clinical psychosis
- The interplay between cannabis use and childhood adversity in increasing risk of (a) clinical psychosis and (b) paranoia
- The impact of Cannabis Use Disorder on the outcome of Clinical psychosis and treatment opportunities
Speaker Bio
Dr. Marta Di Forti is a Professor of Drugs, Genes and Psychosis at the Dept of Social, Developmental and
Genetic Research, KCL. She leads the first Cannabis Clinic for patients with Psychotic disorders in UK. In
2021 she was awarded the Royal College of Psychiatrist Researcher of the year prize. In 2020 she was
granted an MRC Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) to expand her research in the role of cannabis use in
psychosis and its underlying biology. Her MRC SRF employes technologies like Virtual Reality, genetic
data, DNA Methylation data, and peripheral levels of endocannabinoids from human participants, in
parallel to running an animal model experiment of pubertal exposure to cannabinoids to investigate
biological markers of susceptibility to psychosis among heavy cannabis users. She founded and currently
runs the first and only in Europe, Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis, which supports young adults with
psychosis to stop/reduce their use. For this work, in 2025 the Outstanding Translational Research Award
by the Schizophrenia International Research Society.
