Description
How would you like to create the type of family environment conducive to helping your teen avoid marijuana misuse? In this session, Dr. Bobby Smyth, child and adolescent addiction psychiatrist, will share his decades of experience and research on the effects of cannabis on youth. Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug in most western countries. In Ireland, it now accounts for most new presentations to substance use treatment services. Cannabis use for most of these people commenced during adolescence. You’ll learn the sad outcomes of early youth cannabis use including criminality, drug dealing, ambivalence, and damage to relationships. Given the continued march toward legalization in the U.S., if we can’t prevent it, what can we do instead as parents to protect our children?
Learning Objectives
At the end of this one-hour webinar, parents will:

- Understand the challenges faced by parents in implementing these strategies in a social context which is increasingly ‘pro-cannabis’
- Understand the specific parenting approaches which seem to support young people with cannabis addiction in making positive changes
