Description
Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is an increasingly recognized but frequently misdiagnosed condition associated with chronic cannabis use, characterized by cyclic vomiting and severe abdominal pain. As cannabis potency continues to rise and public perception shifts toward normalization, clinicians across medical and behavioral health settings encounter CHS with greater frequency. This training will provide a comprehensive overview of CHS, including its pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and distinguishing features from other gastrointestinal and psychiatric conditions. Participants will also explore how cannabis potency, patterns of use, and co-occurring disorders impact the development and course of CHS. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based assessment strategies, effective patient and family education, and interdisciplinary approaches to treatment.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify the core clinical features and diagnostic criteria of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)
  • Participants will be able to differentiate CHS from other gastrointestinal and psychiatric conditions by applying evidence-based assessment and diagnostic strategies.
  • Participants will be able to analyze the relationship between chronic cannabis use, increasing THC potency, and the development of CHS.
  • Participants will be able to apply evidence-based interventions for the management of CHS, including patient and family education, acute symptom management, and long-term treatment planning.
  • Participants will be able to evaluate the role of behavioral health interventions in supporting cannabis cessation and preventing recurrence of CHS symptoms.
