This presentation will discuss several drug trends around cannabis.  It will discuss other products which are commonly being used from the Cannabis and Hemp plants, along with synthetics.  It will discuss many reasons these products are commonly consumed, sold and manufactured.  We will identify many of dangers with many of these products especially among our youth.

  • Identify the dangers of several of these products.
  • Common combinations of many of these products.
  • Identify the reason these products are being manufactured, sold and consumed.
  • How we can keep these products out of our communities. 

Speaker Bio
Officer Mike Thomas is a Senior Police Officer with the City of Spokane Police Department, in the State of Washington. He served as a police officer since 1997. With nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, Officer Thomas specializes in impaired driving enforcement, drug recognition, and
professional training for law enforcement and medical communities.

He holds a degree in Administration of Justice and continued his education at the University of Idaho. Throughout his career, he has completed more than 1,683 hours of drug-related training and has delivered over 3,435 hours of instruction in drug, alcohol, and impaired driving topics.

Officer Thomas is currently assigned to the Traffic Unit as a DUI Officer, Motor Officer, Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.) Instructor, and Impaired Driving Training Coordinator. He has been a certified D.R.E. since 2000 and a D.R.E. Instructor since 2005, instructing at Washington State D.R.E. Schools and assisting with field certifications. He is a Licensed Medical Phlebotomist who manages and trains the law enforcement phlebotomy program for Spokane Police Department and other surrounding agencies.

He has served on the Washington State D.R.E. Advisory Board since its inception and continues to act as the D.R.E. Regional Coordinator, overseeing more than 14,312 square miles of eastern Washington State.

Since 2005, Officer Thomas has instructed impaired driving courses at the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy. He also provides advanced drug trend education to medical and treatment professionals, including instruction for the Washington State University School of Nursing and the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, as well as local hospitals and healthcare providers throughout the state.

In 2019, Officer Thomas joined the Spokane Municipal DUI Therapeutic and Accountability Court as a team member, bringing a law enforcement and D.R.E. perspective to the therapeutic court model.

Officer Thomas continues to promote prevention and awareness through his Current Drug Trend courses, fostering collaboration between law enforcement, medical professionals, and community partners throughout Washington State.
