Mike, my lovable, funny son was only 13 years old when his middle school music teacher introduced him to smoking weed to “chill out.” Because of his strange, secretive, erratic behavior I thought Mike had become mentally ill. Parents are often the last to know. Had the school informed me, I could have taken decisive action when it was still possible. He loved to help people, and he loved to work. He couldn’t focus on studies or a career though. His brain had been permanently compromised from that time. His panic attacks and a seizure I witnessed were frightening He did finally become a chef, a job he loved. Finally Mike became a full-blown addict and died of Fentanyl/cocaine overdose. A neighbor commented: ” It was his choice.” Yes, it was his choice to follow the “progressive” teacher’s example when he was 13. After that, he couldn’t pull himself out of that hole no matter how many rehabs he completed. Mike was sensitive and caring-as others are who fall into that drug trap.
